Usually dashed off in a couple of hours by somebody who would rather be doing something else.

When letters can be one of the sharpest tools in the box, why do they so often turn into sledgehammers?

Here, I think, are the main reasons:

They’re short on ‘ideas’
They lack finesse
They’re repetitive

In other words, to write a good letter consumes vast amounts of a scarce commodity – time.

On top of that, there are no pictures or graphics and space is tight. And of course the words, sentences and paragraphs must be short and to the point; the tone relaxed, engaging and friendly.

That’s what people like to read.

Or put another way- we warm to letters that are written from one human being to another.

I want this page to convey two things to you: a) that I write copy for a living and b) having read the words and sentiments, you’ll understand something about me.

Because for better or worse, what you’re reading is what you get – i.e., copy that’s informal, personable and punchy. If my approach falls wide of the mark as far as you’re concerned, well that’s my loss. I can’t write any other way.
