Small business is big business

It's estimated that there are 4.5 million businesses in Britain, of which 90% are small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with no more than 49 employees. In and around the East and West Midlands, small businesses are big business simply because they generate an immense amount of wealth for the region. It is essential, therefore, that Midlands-based entrepreneurs and established business owners have easy and convenient access to the financial resources and expertise they need to be successful. Here at the West Brom, we have those resources and skills.

Here to serve everyone

As our name suggests, the West Brom’s roots are firmly in The Midlands and as the conurbation has evolved, so we have evolved with it. Our location in the heart of the UK and the markets we serve, are of great relevance to local business people. This part of the world is one of the most ethnically diverse outside of London and because of that, many of the people who work at the West Brom have grown up in very different environments. Doing business with an organisation which has the necessary cultural knowledge and insights, helps eliminate misunderstandings and substantially improves communication. In other words, when you want us to do something for you, you’ll get it done correctly and quickly.

A local building society with a finger on the local business pulse

The majority of our 600,000+ customers live and work in and around Birmingham and the Black Country. Unlike other major financial institutions, we believe that maintaining a high street presence helps us to keep in touch with, and better meet, the needs of our customers. Through our network of 46 branches, our dedicated teams transact with many local business owners – both start ups and successful going concerns - every day of the week. Not only do we understand local markets and the day-to-day realities and needs of people who run businesses across the Midlands, we also provide our customers with a local point of contact and support. Try getting a similar on-the-spot, on-demand style of service elsewhere!

More choice for your business

Although no two businesses are exactly the same, experience shows they have very similar requirements when it comes to financial products. Top of the list in that respect, being choice and value for money. Generally speaking, we can offer small businesses more options than our competitors, simply because we select sources of finance and advice according to our clients’ specific requirements. Say for example you needed a commercial mortgage; you may find that your current source is only able to offer you their own product, which may be less than ideal. That doesn’t happen at the West Brom: we work with a range of lenders so you can expect us to find the best solution possible for you. We can also help with setting up insurances and arrange tangible and worthwhile financial benefits for your employees in the form of concessionary mortgage and savings arrangements. Your business is an asset that you have worked hard to create and one hopefully that will play an important role in your retirement plans. When that moment arrives, we’ll be there to provide you with specialist, tailor-made advice to help protect and preserve the value and wealth you’ve built up in your business over the years.

How the service works

Whenever you need our help, the first person to speak to will be your Area Development Manager (ADM) – he or she will be your dedicated point of contact within our Business to Business service. Your ADM is responsible for compiling (and keeping up to date) all the details we need to ensure we provide the standard of service you require. Having a thorough knowledge of your business and your personal financial affairs enables us to assume responsibility for ensuring your requirements are fully met. Even if you don’t get in touch with us, we will give you a call at least every three months. By keeping in contact with you, we can keep you up to speed with changes in regulations that could create opportunities for your business. We’ll answer your questions and work alongside you, giving you on-going expert financial advice that’s right for your business and providing the financial services you need, as and when you need them, in a simple and effortless manner.

How we can help look after your business

First of all, it makes no difference to us what the nature or size of your business is - manufacturing, retailing, construction, professional services - our service is relevant and valuable to any and every kind of enterprise.

Commercial Mortgage Broking – we’re in touch with a diverse range of mortgage providers – from the big household names to little-known specialist providers. So no matter what kind of commercial property you want to buy, or if you just want to remortgage to reduce your outgoings, we’ll know a lender who wants to help and do business with you. This service is particularly relevant to businesses which are looking to borrow £25,000 - £30,000,000.

General Business Insurances – every business must have the right insurances in place, but because all businesses are different, they also face different risks. We can put you in touch with a team of commercial insurance specialists who understand that small businesses have special needs and also appreciate the day-to-day practicalities of running a small business.

Financial Planning – our professionally-qualified financial advisers can provide you with straightforward guidance on how to make the most of the monetary rewards your business provides. On a personal basis, we can (for example) help you select investments, set up a pension, arrange insurances, mitigate your tax bill and help you make those all-important choices in retirement. Because people are vulnerable to life’s twists and turns, businesses are as well. But there are steps that can be taken to make your enterprise, and the people who work in it, less susceptible to life’s unwelcome surprises by arranging insurance for key workers. The assets and wealth you have built up in your business can significantly improve your future personal wealth and financial security. When you’re ready to capitalise on your success we will identify and assess all the options available to you and help you make the decision that best meets your needs.

Private Medical Care – if you or one of your colleagues became ill and unable to work and had to wait for a hospital bed, how badly could that affect your business? One of the benefits of private medical insurance is that it can make life a lot easier for you (and your colleagues if required) by arranging medical treatment quickly, which helps minimise the disruption to your business.

Corporate Deposit Accounts – whenever you have surplus funds you want to be certain of two points…1. that you’re money is earning as high a rate of interest as possible and 2. you have instant access to your funds with no standard charges: we have a range of accounts that meet both those needs.

How we can help look after your staff

When people believe an employer is genuinely concerned about their welfare, staff are much more likely to make a greater effort and contribution to the business. Bonus schemes or performance-related pay can be expensive, but an Employee Benefit Scheme can increase loyalty and morale and at relatively little cost to the business. We’ve been establishing tailor made Employee Benefit Schemes for small businesses for many years, so we know how valuable they can be in attracting and keeping staff. Setting up the scheme in your organisation’s name, gives individuals a greater sense of belonging and because you have taken the trouble to establish a scheme just for them, they feel valued.

What an Employee Benefit Scheme can offer

You can help every member of your staff start putting something away – no matter how small an amount that may be - simply by deducting savings directly from wages or salary. Making direct deductions also ensures that they keep saving which enables your people to start taking control of their future financial security. Managing a direct savings scheme entails no effort on your or your employees’ part – it all happens automatically.

We can help your staff buy a first home, move house, or remortgage an existing residence to reduce the monthly repayments. If you have employees who are interested acquiring residential property for investment purposes, then we can assist with a buy to let mortgage and expert advice on the matter. As well as offering attractive rates (we are listed in mortgage best buy tables on a regular basis) we can also provide very worthwhile financial assistance to any of your people who are first time buyers.

Financial security and a track record of success

The West Brom is the 8th largest and one of the best-performing building societies in the UK with assets in excess of £8bn. The Society is a diversified, dynamic and forward-thinking business, which is not wholly dependant on traditional building society products and services. Over the past five years we have established a number of subsidiaries, each of which serves very different markets and offers complementary services to our traditional customer base. These subsidiaries, which make a significant contribution to our profits, include:
